Mental Health Resources for Firefighters

Firefighters are known to give their all when it comes to protecting lives and property. Like many other professionals who use EMS equipment, they are expected to always be on the top of their game, which necessitates remaining calm and level-headed when faced with challenging circumstances. Sadly, the culture of their service many times go beyond offering emergency services, as they are always expected to manage the stress and emotions that come with the job.

Firefighters have been reported to suppress their emotions, resulting in serious consequences as it concerns their mental health. According to studies, the vast majority of firefighters have experienced severe mental issues, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and even suicide. Unfortunately, despite statistics, many firefighters aren’t taking their mental health seriously and are reluctant to seek help because they fear they may lose their jobs. More so, those who have sought help via employer assistant programs haven’t received significant support.

Growing Trends

Today, many organizations are beginning to make mental health awareness among firefighters a priority. Thanks to the programs and initiatives put in place at both national and regional levels, mental health awareness is fast becoming one of the biggest trends in the fire service in 2019. More so, a growing number of fire departments have started working on education, response, and support programs for their staff.

Organizations like the Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance have been working closely with departments to develop a comprehensive mental health education resource. These programs have been uniquely designed to get rid of the stigmas that come with mental health, while also giving firefighters the needed tool to quickly identify mental health issues in themselves and their colleagues.

In the same vein, the Code Green Campaign, another essential organization, is working around the clock to raise awareness about mental health issues. They are also providing firefighters with the necessary educational materials and resources needed to take care of themselves and others.

While firefighters put their lives on the line to protect lives and property daily, it is essential that they take care of their mental health. To this end, mental health awareness should be made a priority across every department, so that every firefighter can function optimally and continue to use their expertise and EMS equipment to save lives.
