How to Manage Mental Health for Covid-19’s First Responders

In the past couple of weeks, our world as we know it has changed dramatically. Our everyday routines have been thrown off by a virus, and half the world isn’t even allowed out of their homes. The world has come together to fight this invisible threat as a cohesive unit and the first responders are at the forefront. Despite the intense training that these first responders receive, nothing could quite prepare someone for this. The career of an EMT is already one that comes with a large amount of stress, but this disaster we are living through is unprecedented. 

In times of crisis, it can be difficult to keep in mind that coping with stress is a necessity. It is also crucial that these first responders are continuously gauging their stress levels and taking the proper procedures to keep their stress and anxiety at a healthy level. It may seem as if this should not be the priority in a time like this, but EMTs will work more effectively if they take the time to manage their stress and anxiety. There are a few signs that indicate a person is suffering from stress overload. Here are a few to keep an eye out for.

Physical signs. One sign that your body is trying to tell you to take a step back and relax is when your heart rate increases rapidly. Some other symptoms might be muscle tension, nausea, extreme fatigue, irritability, and much more.

Social and emotional signs. When a person is suffering from immense stress, they may begin to exert some abnormal attributes such as anger and frustration. Someone that is regularly laid back and kind could change into someone they are not. This could create conflict between them and their loved ones. 

Confusion. Excessive stress can sometimes have a direct effect on a person’s ability to think clearly. Their problem-solving skills as well as their ability to recall instruction may be burdened by the overwhelming weight of stress.

To help these heroes maintain mental wellness, and to assist them to perform at the peak of their abilities, they must take the necessary time for breaks, limit caffeine, maintain sleep patterns, maintain a healthy diet, and spend time with loved ones.
