Whether you’re dealing with a storm, fire, earthquake, or another natural disaster, it’s important to be prepared. Here are a few things you can do to make sure you’re ready when disaster strikes.
Have a Plan If You Need to Evacuate
If you’ll need to leave your home, you need to have a plan for where you can family can temporarily stay.
The home of a friend or family member or a pre-selected emergency shelter are all viable options; see that you communicate with your family ahead of time where you will meet if your home is inaccessible.
Decide How You’ll Stay Connected
Unfortunately, cell phones aren’t always reliable in a natural disaster. You might not have service or you may find yourself unable to charge your device.
Consider investing in long-range walkie-talkies if you tend to work and stay within the range of the walkie-talkies. You might store them in your car or emergency kit so that you always know where they are.
Or, another option is to designate someone outside of your disaster area as a communication hub where you can leave messages and instructions for one another. Your family should either have their number memorized or see that it’s written on a piece of paper.
Make Sure You Can Be Self-Sufficient
You need to assemble an emergency kit that includes everything you need for up to five days. If you regularly commute a reasonable distance from your home, you may want to have another kit that you keep in your car or at your workplace.
Include non-perishable food, water (you’ll need three gallons per person for each day), and disposable eating utensils. Don’t forget to include pet food, basic toiletries, and copies of important documents (store them in a waterproof container).
Your emergency kit also needs medical equipment, such as a first aid kit with supplies for treating wounds, burns, and sprains, face masks to keep you from breathing in debris, and prescription and basic over-the-counter medication.
