CPR training manikins are valuable tools for safely and conveniently teaching and practicing lifesaving CPR procedures. To prevent the spread of germs and ensure the manikin remains hygienic, there are a few things you should do to keep it clean.
Use a Different Laerdal Manikin Face for Each Student
When possible, each student should have their own Laerdal manikin face. The Laerdal manikin faces are reusable, making them an excellent option for a course or series of classes.
If it isn’t possible or feasible for each student to have their own Laerdal manikin face, another option is to use a Laerdal manikin face shield.
These shields are low-cost, disposable, and easy to put on and take off the manikin. Each student should sanitize the manikin face after they use it by wiping it down with an approved manikin cleaning face wipe.
Follow Proper Sanitizing Procedures During Class
Manikin wipes are an effective alternative for keeping training manikins clean and hygienic, but they need to be properly used to remove as many germs as possible.
Rub the nose and mouth vigorously before wrapping it around the nose and mouth areas. Make sure the wipe has a snug fit, and hold it in place for 30 seconds. Then, dry the manakin’s face with a paper towel.
After the class is over, any removable parts should be cleaned using the appropriate manual cleaning procedures or automatic cleaning equipment.
The manikin’s face should be disassembled and submerged for 20 minutes in hot water (between 140 and 158 degrees Fahrenheit) and washed using dish detergent. Use a brush as necessary to thoroughly clean the surfaces.
If additional cleaning is needed, a chemical product intended for manikin use may be used.
Dispose of Single-Use Items After Each Use
Some items used for CPR training are not meant to be reused, even if they’re cleaned. For example, a manikin airway is a single-use piece and should be thrown away after the class.
