Working in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) field means that you must always be prepared to help one or more individuals at a moment’s notice. No matter the emergency that you and your fellow EMT workers respond to on any given day, it’s imperative to be prepared to work not only with one another but also utilize the equipment you have on hand that’s designed to assist you while on the scene.
Coast Biomedical Equipment would like to remind you of the importance of doing an inventory check during each shift change. An inventory check will ensure that you and your team have all the resources and inventory you need when a call for help arises.
During each shift change, take the time to replenish your supply of life-saving equipment, double-check the charge on items that contain batteries, and test all equipment. It would be distressing, after all, to respond to an emergency only to find that your box of sterile gloves is empty, your non-contact infrared thermometer isn’t working, or you’re short on essential wound care supplies. Making an EMT scramble to find or fix equipment—or worse, do without—should be prevented at all costs. In this type of scenario, the EMT may feel frustrated, frantic, and helpless, and the patient’s condition has the potential to quickly worsen.
A strong inventory management system will make it far less likely for EMTs and paramedics to run out of crucial, life-saving supplies. Regular inventory checks will provide them the peace of mind they deserve during every dispatch, and also allow them to focus on what matters most: the patient(s). During an emergency, every second counts.
You may find it helpful to create a checklist for EMT workers to complete before a shift change. Getting EMT workers in the habit of checking inventory will go a long way in making sure they and their fellow responders have everything they need to respond quickly and efficiently—every day, every call.
