Here’s How to Train for a Career as an EMT
An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) provides emergency medical services to those in need. If you are interested in becoming an EMT, here is information on the training needed to become an EMT.
Find an EMT Program
The first thing to do is search for an EMT training program. It has to be approved by the state, and it must focus on emergency medical technology. Coast Biomedical Equipment provides the EMS supplies needed for the training. To avoid issues with certification, the training must be approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Once you find an EMT training program that suits you, review the qualifications you will need to start it.
Complete Basic Education Requirements
A college degree isn’t necessary for becoming an EMT. You do need a high school diploma or GED to qualify, though. You can’t begin training until you have one or the other.
Obtain Certification in CPR
Along with basic education, EMT candidates need to possess certification in CPR. Depending on the training you take, the classes for cardiopulmonary resuscitation could be online or in person. The American Red Cross and American Heart Association have approved lists of CPR courses near you.
Pass a Written Test
There are two tests you must pass before you are certified as an EMT. The first one is the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician cognitive exam. This is a written test that covers EMS supplies and operations for cardiology, gynecology, and other medical specialties.
Pass a Physical Test
The next test shows your ability to perform several emergency procedures. These include how to control bleeding, set bones, manage heart issues, and provide accurate patient assessments. This is normally run by a state’s emergency management services office.
