Healthcare Workers: Guide to Protective Gear

Protective gear is vital for healthcare workers who need to protect themselves while supplying essential care to patients. Coast Biomedical Equipment offers a variety of protective gear to ensure you have sufficient supplies. Here are a few items that healthcare workers need to ensure they have a high level of protection.

Gowns

A gown is a disposable covering that protects healthcare workers from solid and liquid materials. There are different levels of protective gowns for healthcare workers to choose from, including surgical gowns, non-surgical gowns, and isolation gowns. Each type of gown has its own level of protection.

Gloves

Gloves are an effective piece of gear to prevent the transmission of germs. Healthcare workers should wear gloves whenever they may encounter bodily fluids, mucous membranes, or broken skin.

It’s important for gloves to fit properly. Gloves that are too loose won’t produce a proper seal, while gloves that are too tight have a higher chance of ripping.

Aprons

An apron is a disposable covering used for additional body protection, especially in situations where there’s a high risk of splashing body fluids.

Face Masks

A face mask covers the nose and mouth to prevent the release of respiratory particles into the air. They protect patients from respiratory droplets exhaled by healthcare worker. Face masks must fit properly to prevent the transmission of respiratory droplets.

Respirators

Respirators are another type of disposable protective gear that covers the nose and mouth, but they have a different purpose than face masks. A respirator protects the healthcare worker from the respiratory particles exhaled by other people.

Goggles

Goggles prevent fluids from splashing into the eyes and they discourage the healthcare worker from infecting their eyes by touching them with contaminated fingers.

You can safely reuse goggles by sanitizing them after each use.

Face Shield

Face shields are used when there is a high risk of fluid splatter and the protection provided by goggles isn’t sufficient. A face shield protects against liquids, not respiratory particles, and should be used with a face mask.
